the fresh air of higashi naruse creates some of the most flavorful vegetables around. tomatoes are one of higashi naruse's specialities. you can find them at the road side stands that are scattered throughout the village.



daikon-giant radishin the fields of higashi naruse you will find many vegetables that are traditionally used in japanese cooking. for example, daikon, a giant white radish; gobu,a root in english called burdock; and edamame, soybeans to name a few. along with the planted vegetables, many sansai or mountain vegetables are available in naruse.



one of the special tastes of higashi naruse is the tsukemono, or japanese pickles. these pickles are made from a variety of different vegetables; cucumber, bamboo shoots, eggplant and different types of mountain vegetables. the monzuke or eggplant tsukemono is a favorite among the people of the village.



in the spring, the apple orchards are filled with hundreds of tiny white flowers. under the summer sun these flowers become the crimson delicious apples that are enjoyed by all.

mountain lilly and daruma dolls

both of these dolls are hand carved and painted here in the village. the kokeshi doll (mountain lilly doll) is decorated with a simplistic facial expression and the village's flower, the mountain lilly. the daruma doll has an expression of concentration painted on his face. in both of the dolls, the natural grain of the wood is combined with artistry to create a doll with ammazing qualities.
